Furnace filters are something that you have to change out from time to time. This should come as no surprise, as a good furnace filter can keep quite a bit of dust and other contaminants from making their way around the house. But how often should you replace your furnace air filter? Well, that depends on several factors. Here are a few tips to help you set up the right schedule to change our your furnace filter.
One of the first things you should look at is the owners manual for your furnace. There you will find basic instructions on how frequently you should change out the furnace filters. Generally speaking, these are just minimum requirements based on standard usage of your furnace. More frequent replacement of the furnace filters may be required based on a couple of other criteria.
First, do you run the furnace for a good bit of the year? Standard usage is normally thought to be the winter months and perhaps a little in the fall and spring as the seasons are changing. However, there are those that live in climates where the weather in the evening requires a furnace for much of the year. If you happen to live in those areas, you may want to check the usage instructions on your Honeywell furnace filters or your Air Bear furnace filters and see what they recommend for replacement, based on usage.
Furnace air filters may require more frequent or less frequent replacement that is based on design. For instance, you like to use 3M furnace filters, in particular a pleated furnace filter type. These may require more frequent replacement than, say, Trane furnace filters, especially the 30X30 furnace filters that Trane first developed a number of years ago.
Replacement air filter procedures are not hard to plan out when you keep in mind how much of the year that you actually use the furnace and take into consideration the furnace manufacturers suggestions for replacement. Along with those criteria, you will want to pay attention to what the maker of the furnace filters consider proper use of their product. Understanding how your particular choice of furnace filter is to be installed and how long it should remain in service will allow you to set up a replacement schedule that will help to keep your home nice and clean, as well as extending the life of your furnace.
