Skin allergies can cause a whole host of problems. Itchy rashes, bumps and dry patchy skin all point to one thing: skin allergies. A skin allergy can be caused by many factors including allergies to pollen in the air, allergies to food and pet allergies. Even skin allergies affect horses. The most common reasons for skin allergies in dogs and cats have to do with allergic reactions to certain foods and airborne allergens. Allergies And Skin Rashes In Pets

In order to understand how to eliminate skin allergies in your pet, it is necessary to know what is causing the allergies in the first place. Dog skin allergies are often related to food, cat skin allergies are usually related to an airborne allergen. However, it is important to remember that the same things can cause skin allergies in dogs and cats. Many times, a canine skin allergy will be because the dog is allergic to the type of food he or she is eating. Because dogs tend to be more things on the ground than cats, it is easy to see why a dog skin allergies are more common. Skin allergies are also more common in certain breeds. For example skin allergy in the Yorkshire terrier, is more common in skin allergies in a Labrador. Cats can also suffer from skin allergies, so it is important to figure out what it is they are allergic to and eliminate that allergen.

Skin Allergies And Itching

Scratching does not always indicate that your pet has fleas. In fact, excessive scratching and a dog or cat can indicate problems with skin allergies. If you notice your dog or cat scratching in one area, (also called a hot spot), or that your pet is itchy all over, then this could indicate feline or canine skin allergies. Another indicator that your dog or cat is suffering from skin allergies is the loss of hair. Some pets will lose fur in one area of their body, while others will experience hair loss all over. If you notice excessive scratching our hair loss on your pet, it is important that you seek the advice of your veterinarian.

Believe it or not skin allergies in dogs and cats are quite common. The best way to help alleviate the symptoms of your pets and allergies is to figure out what they are allergic to and reduce their exposure to that allergen.
